Day trek to Pandava Gufa (cave) and the temple atop Karol Ka Tibba (hill)

A 5.6 kilometre moderate day trek leads you through fir groves, sprawling grasslands, dense forests, small ponds, a mysterious cave and panoramic views. The beauty of "Karol ka Tibba" trek is that it fits this immense natural bounty in a short day trek. "Karol ka Tibba" is the highest hill around Solan town in Himachal Pradesh. In this trek we visit Karol temple; a temple dedicated to goddess Kali situated at the top of Karol Ka Tibba. The panoramic view from the temple is beautiful and panoramic. The trekking route also passes through the famous Pandava Gufa or Pandava cave, believed to be the oldest and longest cave in the Himalayas.

Winter day trek from Janjehli to Shikari Mata

At 3342 metres, Shikari Mata is a roofless temple, dedicated to a hunting goddess. Legend has it, hunters used to worship the Goddess on the mountain for success in their hunt. The temple is connected to Janjehli town in Himachal Pradesh with a 18 kilometre fair weather road. In winters, this fair weather road is closed just after Janjehli due to heavy snow drifts. The trek from Janjehli to Shikari Mata along this closed road is difficult yet exhilarating trek. The trek is difficult because of the large distance to be covered in one day and some avalanche prone sections. Yet for its difficulty this trek offers beautiful views, the lack of need for navigation, solitude and a unparalleled sense of accomplishment. If you are contemplating a challenging winter trek, we recommend you try this trek to get your snow-craft and winter gear sorted.

Winter trek to Bijli Mahadev

Bijli Mahadev is a temple dedicated to lord Shiva. At an elevation of 2452 metres, the temple overlooks Parvati valley. This temple is unique because the ‘Shiva-Lingam' in the temple is occasionally struck by lightning and it shatters into pieces. The acting priest then uses butter as an adhesive to put the lingam together. The temple is named after this natural phenomena, where"Bijli" refers to lightning and "Mahadev" is one of the names for lord Shiva. The trek to Bijli Mahadev temple is an easy 3 kilometre climb from Chansari Village. The village lies 24 kilometres east of Kullu (H.P.). The route is well marked and it is part rock and part concrete. The trail begins as a stiff climb but it eases out into a gentle climb after the first kilometre.

Trek from Baagi village to Prashar Lake

Prashar Lake lies 50 km north of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, India. Along the lake is a three storied pagoda-like temple dedicated to sage Prashar. Built in the thirteenth century, legend has it that the temple was built by a baby from a single tree. Sage Prashar is believed to have meditated here and the lake is held sacred. Snow-capped peaks surround the lake and temple and the trek to the lake provides breathtaking views of Dhauladhar, Pir Pinjal and Kinnaur mountain ranges.  A "good weather" road connects Baagi village to Prashar Lake. During winters, this road is closed because of heavy snowfall that this ridge receives. However, the presence of a road, albeit closed, ensures a painless navigation to the lake. The route is simple to follow with no steep ascents or descents. These factors combined, make this 16 kilometer trek an excellent beginner winter trek that is also quite child friendly.

Overnight winter trek to Snowline cafe (near Triund)

Snowline café is a small tea shop, 3 kilometres from Triund on the Triund - Indrahar Pass trail. Nestled on a ridge this café affords a panoramic view of Indrahar pass and the Dhauladhars. A well marked yet narrow trail with a sheer drop leads to the café. This narrow trail becomes more treacherous in winters when the trail markers are often obscured by fresh snow and overnight ice makes this slippery. This trek, especially after a fresh snowfall, is in a different league when compared with the trek to Triund. Thus, we recommend that you tackle this trek, if you have the required winter trekking experience.

Overnight winter trek to Triund

A winter trek to Triund is an easy to moderate (depending on snow) 6 kilometre trek over a wide well-marked trail. Nevertheless, winter trekking does come with its share of challenges. Care is needed to negotiate accumulated snow and ice along the way. A pair of low flex, stiff soled boots is preferred for this trek.
