Winter day trek from Janjehli to Shikari Mata

At 3342 metres, Shikari Mata is a roofless temple, dedicated to a hunting goddess. Legend has it, hunters used to worship the Goddess on the mountain for success in their hunt. The temple is connected to Janjehli town in Himachal Pradesh with a 18 kilometre fair weather road. In winters, this fair weather road is closed just after Janjehli due to heavy snow drifts. The trek from Janjehli to Shikari Mata along this closed road is difficult yet exhilarating trek. The trek is difficult because of the large distance to be covered in one day and some avalanche prone sections. Yet for its difficulty this trek offers beautiful views, the lack of need for navigation, solitude and a unparalleled sense of accomplishment. If you are contemplating a challenging winter trek, we recommend you try this trek to get your snow-craft and winter gear sorted.

Trek from Baagi village to Prashar Lake

Prashar Lake lies 50 km north of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, India. Along the lake is a three storied pagoda-like temple dedicated to sage Prashar. Built in the thirteenth century, legend has it that the temple was built by a baby from a single tree. Sage Prashar is believed to have meditated here and the lake is held sacred. Snow-capped peaks surround the lake and temple and the trek to the lake provides breathtaking views of Dhauladhar, Pir Pinjal and Kinnaur mountain ranges.  A "good weather" road connects Baagi village to Prashar Lake. During winters, this road is closed because of heavy snowfall that this ridge receives. However, the presence of a road, albeit closed, ensures a painless navigation to the lake. The route is simple to follow with no steep ascents or descents. These factors combined, make this 16 kilometer trek an excellent beginner winter trek that is also quite child friendly.
